THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN

Once there was a small beautiful town in Germany. People lived happily there but suddenly the town was faced with a great problem, it became full of rats. The rats were very big and fierce, they fought the dogs, kill the cats, bit the babies in the cradles. They ate up everything .The people became very helpless. One day they went to the town and told the Mayor about their sufferings. The Mayor called up a meeting of his councilor. They talked about different plans but could not find any way to kill the rats. Just then a stranger entered the room with a pipe in his hand.

He told the Mayor that he would get rid of all the rats if the Mayor agreed to pay him ten thousand guilders. The Mayor agreed to the proposal. The pied piper walked out in the street, pulled out of his flute and started playing it. Soon the rats of every house of Hamelin came out tumbling. He moved along the streets and the rats followed him. He went down to the bank of the river.

All the rats that followed him drowned the river. The pied piper came to the Mayor and demanded the promised money. But the Mayor wanted to give him only five hundred guilders. This annoyed the piper. He left the Mayor office and stood in the street. He took up his pipe and began to play a different tune. But on hearing the tune, the children of the town came out running.

As the Piper walked along the streets, they followed him singing and dancing. The Piper was walking towards the mountain. As they came near the mountain, a door opened. The Piper and the children walked into the mountain and the door closed.

An Idle King

Once there was an old king. He was averse to physical labor. As a result, he grew very fat and could not move from one place to another easily. He called on a doctor. The doctor was very clever and wise. He could easily understand that the idleness of the king is the root cause of his obesity. He thought that if he could reduce the obesity of the king, he would feel well. But the only way to do this was to advise the king to do physical labor. The doctor was afraid of how he could ask a king for physical labor. He also thought that if he advised him to do physical labor and if the king didn’t do so, he would grow bulkier. Finally, he hit upon a plan.

He told the king that his (king) physical condition was not good at all and that’s why he needed immediate treatment. Hearing this, the king became gloomy and told the doctor to do everything for his cure. The doctor assured him saying that there was only one medicine for it but it was somehow difficult for anyone to apply. The king told him that he would do everything for his cure. Then, the doctor gave him a club and told him to brandish it in the morning and in the evening for at least one hour each day. At the very beginning day, when the king started waving the club, he became very tired. Sweat came out of his body and he found the task very difficult. He had no way but to do that. The king continued doing the job for one month. After a month, he found himself fresh and healthy. His bulky body became normal and he looked very smart, After a month, the doctor called on the king in his palace. The king was very happy to see the doctor. The doctor told the king that physical labor is the best medicine to keep the body fit. The king understood the doctor’s technique. He praised the doctor and thanked him for prescribing such good medicine for him. The king, however, thanked the doctor for prescribing the right medicine. He also rewarded him. The king followed the advice of the physician. In a consequence of this fat grew less. He became a bit thin. Thus he became fully cured of his disease after some days of regular physical labor.

Moral: The moral of the story is that if you want to achieve something, you can get it by working hard.

Greed Brings Disaster

Once there was a dog. He was very hungry. He wandered door to door. He stole a piece of bone from a butcher’s shop and ran away with it. He wanted to eat it alone. So he moved away from there immediately.

On the way, there was the river. He wanted to cross the river. He had to pass over a bridge. When he was passing over the bridge, he saw his own image in the water. He took it for another dog with a piece of bone in its mouth. He was very greedy. His mouth watered. He wanted to have that bone also. The dog looked at his own shadow in the water. When he opened his mouth, his own piece of bone fell into the water. He was very sad and repented over his foolish deed. But it was too late for him to take action.

Moral: The moral of the story is ‘We should not be greedy in our activities.’ Greed is a curse and it makes us selfish, short-tempered, anxious and also jealous of others.

A little learning is a dangerous thing

Once there lived a man in a village. He had a great attraction for English and so he went to a teacher. The teacher began to teach him, but the man was dull-headed. The man could not understand the rules of grammar. After a long effort of the teacher, the man learned only three words. They were ‘Yes’, ‘No’ and ‘Very good’. With these three words, he came to his village. He thought he learned quite a lot of English. He began using these three English words most of the time irrelevantly. He did not think whether they were contextually right or wrong. He just used them everywhere.

One night a theft was committed in the village. The following day the police came to the village. He asked the man whether he knew about the theft. He answered in his usual way ‘Yes’. The police asked him to tell the police about the theft. But the man said ‘No’. At this, the police had a doubt in him but they did not want to arrest him. Then they arrested him and told him to go to the police station with them. He just told them “Very Good”. Thus the man fell in danger. He was sent to prison for his little knowledge.

Moral: The moral of the story is that a little knowledge of anything can be dangerous in life. So, one must acquire knowledge properly and try to apply it to its fullest.

A thirsty crow

One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water. For a long time, he could not find any. He felt very weak, almost lost all hope. Suddenly, he saw a water jug below the tree. He flew straight down to see if there was any water inside. Yes, he could see some water inside the jug!

The crow tried to push his head into the jug. Sadly, he found that the neck of the jug was too narrow. Then he tried to push the jug to tilt for the water to flow out, but the jug was too heavy.

The crow thought hard for a while. Then, looking around it, he saw some pebbles. He suddenly had a good idea. He started picking up the pebbles one by one, dropping each into the jug. As more and more pebbles filled the jug, the water level kept rising. Soon it was high enough for the crow to drink. His plan had worked!

Moral: The moral of the story is that any danger can be avoided by using intelligence. It also teaches us about the presence of mind and importance of hard work in life.
