In the name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Most Beneficent

Reports on Class Observation, School Visit, Co-curricular Activities and Action Research

Introduction:

It is my pleasure to write something about the school which I have visited and taken classes. The school is situated at the heart of Dhaka city in Gulshan. The school is run by a foreign NGO which provides food, shelter and others education related materials to the students at free of cost. I feel glad to have worked such kind of institution which offers free education to our poor and distress children.

It offers education to the students aged from six to sixteen. Here most of the students are orphanages and distressed. This NGO operates many institutions across the country. It operates in twelve districts in Bangladesh. Here the school has two separate building with four floors in each building and each and every floor is used in multifarious purposes. The classes of the boys and girls are held in separate floors. It has a boy’s hostel where poor students can stay and have their food and shelter at free of cost.

Description of the School:

It has fifteen classrooms and a big teacher’s room. Two rooms are used separately for principal and vice-principal. As it is an institution run by an NGO so it has separate monitoring office for daily monitoring of the school activities and other related functions. It has a small library having hundreds of books for the students. Students can take books taking permission from the vice-principal if they needed any. I feel honour to have worked at this institution for a while.

 About Faculty:

Here all the faculty members are very well-educated having good academic records. They are very active participants in teaching to the students. All the faculty members are very dedicated, helpful and friendly towards the students. They keep supervising the performance of the students and help the dull and weak students personally. In fact all the teachers are ready to help their students. The most important thing is that teachers and students are involved in learning process.

Co-curricular Activities:

In this organization students are actively involved in co-curricular activities. There are two teachers who teach the learners how to draw pictures and how to sing Islamic songs. Here I have found that one day in a week is reserved for the cultural functions. In cultural classes students are taught about painting, drawing, recitation of the holy Quran and singing Islamic songs. Even once in a month, cultural competition is arranged and given away prizes among the winners. Every student must participate in monthly competition program. Furthermore, the students are also taught the technique about good hand writings. Those who are exceptionally good they participate on national level competition in different time. Many students have already won prizes in different national level competition in previous year.

Special Activity:

In addition, this school has one special program in co-curricular activities called ‘Let’s clean Bangladesh’. The title is very significant and it refers to our social responsibility towards our community. This program is held once in a month as a part of social responsibility. Selected students go outside of the campus and start collecting rubbishes and cleaning surrounding of the school campus and other parts of the area. Students collect dust and put in suitable places on in a bin to burn them. In fact it symbolizes the cleaning whole Bangladesh and makes our country neat and clean in real sense. This kind of activity should be taken in all educational institution to make the environment neat and clean and encourage other to come forward and work hand in hand. This activity has really fascinated me profoundly.

Class room Observation:

As a part of my B.Ed course I have observed several different classes on various subjects. I have profoundly experienced while observing different classes of different teachers. Each and every class was taken very seriously and all were very informative. I was really astonished to see how the respective teachers delivered the message to the learners very easily. In most of the part the teachers usually followed lecture based method and it was found that in the classrooms learners lost the interest on topics. In addition, teachers were not able to maintain the time schedule. It also often observed few teachers were finished their lesson late in the class. Here I have taken part in ten classes in total of various subjects. It is to be mentioned here activity base learning was completely absent in the classrooms. So here I have mentioned some drawbacks what I have found during observing the classes.

 Drawbacks:

Though the school has very good reputation in terms of result, discipline and other activities but it has some drawbacks as well. I have found some problems while taking classes and observing others classes and other functions of the school. Here are some drawbacks:

v Dropping out rate is very high in this institute

v Leisure break is very short. That’s why students cannot have their  refreshments properly

v Sometimes teachers don’t follow the lesson plan as it supposed to be

v Students lose interest to pay attention especially in last the classes

v Classes time are quite long in last two classes so that students get bored

v Very limited used of teaching aids in the classrooms and teaching aids are not attractive to the learners

v Lesson plan is not activity based according to the guidelines

v Students sometimes find no interest in the topics while teaching

v Teachers are often confused using chalk and black board for writing

v Sometimes teachers are unable to hold the attention of the students in the topics

v Teaching aids are not sometimes matched with the topics

v The school does not have open space for children to play or run

v As the school has both residential and outside students so here in terms of performance outside students are weak in learning

Recommendation:

Here are some suggestions to be implemented to overcome above mentioned drawbacks.

v Dropout rate should decrease by inspiring students to come to school

v Lesson plan should be updated and more time to be given for students feedback

v Lessons should be interesting and enjoyable to the students

v Teaching aids should be attractive to the students and it should be matched with the prescribed topics

v New methods to be implemented to hold the attention of the students

v Leisure time to be given more so that students can have their time to have their refreshments

v Modern teaching aids to be used to hold the attention of the learners

v White board and marker to be introduced soon to avoid dust in the classrooms for writing

v Quiz competition others sort of activities can be taken to remove the routine monotony of the students

v Providing lots of success oriented story to the students to make the lesson memorable and enjoyable

v For the weak students relate the lesson with real life situation for better understanding of the students

v Creating friendly environment, praise and reinforcement for the students for learning more

v Modern method of teaching should be applied

v Adding Varity of academic routine like

v Teachers should know how to use modern teaching materials

v Multimedia and other modern teaching aids can be used to teach the learners in better way

Thus taking some good measures can increase the learning procedure of the learners. As the main target of a teacher to transfer the information to the learner so teacher should upgrade himself and should know how to deliver the message to the learners. By taking some motivational steps dropout rate of the students can be reduced easily. I wish the very success of the institution in future.

Action Research:

Action research is needed to reflect the topics more deeply and systematically on teaching practices for the students. It is also necessary in evaluating the effect of actions and practices to seek opportunities to improve teaching technique. Following steps can be taken to improve the quality of teaching.

v Learn from the both the positive and the negative results of a student

v Keep an eye on the learners what they really need

v Keep an open mind towards the students so that they can feel comfortable asking questions

v New message can be shared easy and comfort way among the learners

v Only teacher can identify what works and what does not among the learners. So teacher should be very active.

v Teachers can then change/improve their strategies  in teaching when they feel they need to improve or change

v Knowing the behavior of the students is very important in teaching the lesson

v Be aware of what is teaching and who are learning

v Make the topics related to the real life oriented story to make it interesting to the learners

v Identifying the problem and try to solve it in a prudent way

v Using individual and groups for development

v For the weak learners repetition method can be suitable

v Teaching lesson subconsciously without realizing method can be an important technique for the comparatively weak students

v Educational game, puzzle can add the variety of teaching technique

As action research is very popular in the field of education because there is always room for improvement or development for individual when it comes to teaching and educating others. Sure, there are all types of methods of teaching in the classroom, but action research works very well because the cycle offers opportunity for continued reflection and suggestion for getting the better result.  It is also beneficial in areas of teaching practice that need to be explored or settings in which continued improvement is the focus. So I hope that individual teacher will do action research for their students to make the lesson fruitful and to get the desire goal.
